Abel Tasman: The Explorer Who Shaped New Australasia’s History

Chapman Tours is renowned for the unforgettable Blue Mountains, we also believe in sharing the rich history and exploration of Australia’s neighbour, New Zealand. One name that stands out in New Zealand’s history is Abel Tasman, the Dutch explorer who first sighted these lands in 1642.

Born in 1603 in a small village in the Netherlands, Tasman’s thirst for adventure led him to join the Dutch East India Company (VOC) in 1633. He quickly rose through the ranks, demonstrating his exceptional navigational skills and courage.

In 1642, Tasman embarked on a historic voyage, commissioned by the VOC to explore the “Great South Land,” a fabled continent believed to exist in the Southern Hemisphere.

He made landfall on the west coast of Tasmania in 1642. Believing it to be part of the mainland, he named it Van Diemen’s Land after the Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies. While he didn’t explore extensively, his voyage marked the first recorded European sighting of Tasmania, opening the door to future exploration and shaping the island’s history. Today, Tasmania bears Tasman’s name in its capital city, Hobart, and in the Tasman Sea that separates it from mainland Australia. On December 13th, Tasman and his crew sighted the west coast of New Zealand’s South Island, becoming the first Europeans to do so

Tasman’s encounter with the Maori people, the indigenous inhabitants of New Zealand, was fraught with tension. A misunderstanding led to a skirmish, resulting in the deaths of several Maori. Despite this tragic event, Tasman’s voyage marked a pivotal moment in New Zealand’s history, opening the door for future exploration and European settlement.

Today, Tasman’s legacy lives on in the stunning Abel Tasman National Park, a coastal paradise named in his honour. The park’s golden beaches, lush forests, and crystal-clear waters attract visitors from around the world, offering a glimpse into the natural beauty that captivated Tasman centuries ago.

While Blue Mountains Day Tours primarily focuses on showcasing Australia’s wonders, we recognise the importance of understanding the broader context of the Pacific region’s history and exploration. The story of Abel Tasman serves as a reminder of the courage, curiosity, and resilience of those who ventured into the unknown, shaping the world we know today.
