The First Blue Mountains Explorers

The Blue Mountains: a majestic landscape of sandstone cliffs, gorges, and eucalyptus forests. Today, a UNESCO World Heritage site and world-renowned tourist spot. However, this region was once a formidable barrier for early European explorers.

In the early 19th century, as Sydney’s agricultural land struggled to support a growing population, the settlers looked towards the Blue Mountains in the West as a source of land. However, the rugged terrain and maze-like valleys posed a daunting challenge. Indigenous peoples, intimately familiar with the land, navigated these paths for generations. But for European settlers, the Blue Mountains remained an enigma, a symbol of both hope and fear.

In 1813, a daring expedition led by Gregory Blaxland, William Charles Wentworth, and William Lawson set out to conquer this natural obstacle. Guided by the wisdom of James Burns, who was a convict described as a “guide and kangaroo hunter” familiar with Aboriginal pathways, and aided by convict servants, they embarked on a long journey.

Their strategy was innovative. Instead of struggling through the valleys like the failed expeditions before them, they traversed the mountain ridges. This approach, combined with their amazing perseverance, led to success. After three weeks, they emerged on the other side, becoming the first Europeans to officially cross the Blue Mountains. Soon after, Governor Lachlan Macquarie retraced the steps of these explorers.

This historic crossing paved the way for further exploration and expansion. George William Evans, an English surveyor and explorer, soon crossed the entire Great Dividing Range on a seven week journey. In  1814, the Englishman William Cox oversaw the construction of a road over the mountains, a remarkable feat of engineering at the time.

Today, you can retrace the steps of these early explorers on a Blue Mountains Day Tour. Our expert guides will share captivating stories of the region’s history, geology, and Aboriginal heritage, bringing the past to life as you traverse the very landscape that once challenged the pioneers.
